Inflatables - Work with Amorphic Robot Works

The following images show THE TOTEMOBILE by Amorphic Robot Works. This Sculpture was commissioned by Citroen cars for the inauguration of their newly built headquarters C42, Champs Elysees, Paris, 2007. I was subcommissioned by ARW to design and make many inflatable sculptural forms which were housed inside the structure and emerged out of it as it transformed up to its 20 metre full hight during a 10 minute cycle of movement.

This sequence shows the overall change in shape of the Totemobile as it moves through its 10 minute cycle.

This is a view of the back and top of the Totemobile as it is partially extended and opened. You can identify the front windscreen opened like a butterfly at thevery top with inflatables bulging out, the roof with two wavy lines along, the rear windscreen also split in two and at the bottom is the rear boot splitting in three, inflatables not emerged yet.

Image shows the Totemobile at full extension from above. For this photo I climbed over 20 metres high into the roof of the building we worked in during final tests of the sculpture. The building was usually used for film shoots and so there were suspended walkways which did not feel too safe.

At the very top of the Totemobile at full extension is this 14 foot high totem inflatable which emerges from within the metal parts seemingly miraculously as there is not much room for it to hide. Inside is a telescoping metal pole which supports it. The forms were inspired by the movement of air (Although I would have to check with the boss on that)

Some Inflatables crinkle as they slowly start to get sucked in to their housing
